Mike stays still in the desert for a day without water. He knows waiting may kill him, but refuses to lift one foot. When rescuers arrive, they discover he could have moved from the beginning.

The answer
After a mine killed his companion, Mike heard a click beneath his own foot. He believed he had triggered a device that would explode if he released the pressure. He waited for help to check it. Beneath his foot was only a crushed can: the danger keeping him there was a mistaken interpretation.
