A regular customer leaves a shop with an increasing bulge beneath her dress. Staff attribute it to a change in her body. When they start asking for a specific date she stops the trick; a later check finds goods beneath removable padding.

The answer
She was pretending to be pregnant and using a false belly to conceal goods. Apparent growth explained the increasing bulk, but questions about the birth made the pretence difficult to maintain around people who knew her. She stopped to avoid explaining a pregnancy that never ended in a birth.
