Lateral thinking: the false assumption mechanism

A good situation puzzle is not hard because it withholds information. It is hard because it makes you take something for granted that is false.

The false assumption

Every premise that works makes the reader build a scene in their head. That scene contains an assumption nobody ever stated — and it is wrong.

As long as the assumption stands, the answer is out of reach: the group can ask all the questions it likes, but it asks them inside the wrong scene. The moment it falls, the answer becomes obvious. That is the «aha» moment, and it is the whole game.

Why yes/no questions are the right format

An open question is answered by explaining, and explaining ruins the puzzle. A closed question forces you to state a precise hypothesis instead — and once the table has stated enough of them, sooner or later somebody states one that questions the assumption rather than working inside it.

The irrelevant answer has a special role: it is the only one that says «you are looking in the wrong place» without saying where the right one is.

How to spot a badly built puzzle

These are the criteria behind this archive: 521 stories were kept out of 975 reviewed, and most of the rejections fell into one of those four cases.

How it differs from a riddle

A riddle is solved by a single intuition, and either you have it or you do not. A situation puzzle is solved by taking a scene apart piece by piece, and the group gets there together. That is why the second one works at a dinner table and the first one does not.
