The Fatal Shot

A hunter shoots at an animal beside an old wooden structure. The animal escapes unharmed; a fresh hole remains in an upright. The hunter hears a crack overhead and cannot get away before something crushes him.

The answer
The bullet struck an already weakened support of a hunting platform. The upright gave way and the platform collapsed onto him. The hole and the overhead crack connect the shot to the structure; the animal did not kill him.
