The answer
Through the window, they had seen stones falling from the slope above the road. Fearing a landslide, they asked the driver to stop, claiming they wanted to reach a trail. They told nobody what they had seen: they wanted to get off immediately rather than spend time persuading the others. The bus drove on and was struck by the landslide. Their guilt came from concealing the danger that had prompted them to flee, rather than from causing the landslide.
