A wind-driven fire sweeps across an island covered in vegetation. A man is trapped: he cannot reach the water or put out the flames. When the fire has burned across the whole island, he is still alive.

The answer
Before the front of the fire reached him, the man lit a second fire in front of him, in the same direction as the wind. When those flames had moved away, he moved onto the already burned ground. The first fire reached there, but found no more vegetation to consume and went around it.
