A group enters the water for a swim during a boat trip. They can all swim, but nobody gets back aboard and nobody survives. The boat has not sunk.

The answer
They were far offshore on a yacht with high, smooth sides. Everyone jumped in without lowering its ladder or leaving someone aboard. No accessible grip let them climb back. Wind then carried the yacht faster than they could follow. Without support or a reachable shore, their ability to swim could not keep them afloat indefinitely.
