Michael deliberately draws a shot that wounds his arm. The others take him away immediately. The next day, the place where he should have been is destroyed, but he is already far away.

The answer
He was a soldier afraid of the next day’s assault. He exposed himself to enemy fire to obtain a wound and was evacuated to hospital. He could not control the shot or guarantee survival; the wound kept him out of that attack.
