Wrong Labels
Level 2 · Medium
Three crates contain apples, pears and a mixture of both. Their labels name those contents, but the warehouse keeper knows every label is wrong. He takes just one fruit from one crate without looking inside, then corrects every label. He does not use smell or weight.

The answer
He sampled the crate labelled “mixed”. Since its label was wrong it held only one kind; an apple identified it as apples. The crate labelled “pears” could hold neither pears nor the apples already identified, so it was mixed. The last held pears. Finding a pear would give the symmetrical solution.
