The thieves locked inside

A security guard catches four thieves in a warehouse and closes the only door they are trying to escape through, locking it from outside. He immediately calls the emergency services. By the time they arrive, the thieves are dead and the guard is arrested, although he never struck them.

The answer
The thieves had started a fire to conceal the theft. The guard saw them running towards the exit and blocked the door to prevent their escape, then called the firefighters. Smoke filled the warehouse before they arrived. By shutting the only escape route, the guard had turned the thieves' capture into a death sentence, even though he had not started the fire.
