A man wakes in an enclosed space and lights a match. He recognises the face beside him and realises nobody will come to open it. Unable to escape, he dies before morning.

The answer
He was a prisoner hiding in a coffin to escape with a funeral. The undertaker had agreed to dig him out after burial. The match revealed that the corpse beside him was the undertaker, the only person who knew the plan. Nobody could rescue him, and he suffocated underground.
