A woman is found shot dead on a snowy bridge. Only her footprints lead to the body. The gun is missing; beneath a chipped part of the railing is a hole in the river ice. Nobody returned to collect the weapon.

The answer
Before shooting herself, she attached the gun to a weight by a rope and left the weight hanging beyond the railing. When she released the gun, the weight fell and pulled it away. The gun struck the railing; the weight broke through the ice. The footprints showed who walked there, not how the weapon left the scene.
