The Recovered Ring

A pure gold ring disappears during a picnic beside a jetty. A witness sees a small box fall into the water. Its owner retrieves the ring using a magnet, but a jeweller confirms it has not been replaced with one made of another metal.

The answer
The magnet attracted the steel box in which someone had hidden the ring, not the gold. Opening the recovered box revealed the recognizable ring. The witnessed fall explained where to search; the container explained how a magnet retrieved a nonmagnetic object.
