A man burns the only sheet on which he typed a threat. Investigators find the typewriter and a disposable strip in the bin. They reconstruct the words without recovering the sheet or using any recordings of the room.
- Choose a narrator: they read the answer privately and hide it.
- Read the premise aloud. Answers: yes, no or irrelevant.
- When the game ends, mark the puzzle as played.

The answer
The machine used a single-use carbon-film ribbon that advanced with each character. Letters transferred onto the paper left corresponding negative marks on the film. Reading their sequence on the discarded ribbon reconstructed the text. An ordinary reused fabric ribbon would not preserve the same ordered record.
