Stabbed in the back
Level 2 · Medium
Two men are sitting in a room, facing each other. The first is facing the only door; the second faces the first and has his back to the door. The building clock strikes every hour, and there are five minutes until the next chime. The clock is hung on the wall, so that both can see it. The first man says to the second: "When the clock strikes, someone will come up behind you and stab you in the back." The second man, somewhat worried, continues talking to the first for five minutes. Punctually, when the clock strikes, he is stabbed in the back. The first man had neither organized nor been informed of the arrival of someone who would stab the second. Furthermore, he had no control over what time the clock would strike. He couldn't even predict the future.
