For a while, notices appeared in one of Prague's main squares: "Warning! Beware of pickpockets!" The local police knew that the square really did have many pickpockets, but systematically removed the notices. Why?
- Choose a narrator: they read the answer privately and hide it.

The answer
Many tourists visited the square. The pickpockets themselves put up the notices to make stealing easier. People who read them instinctively checked that their valuables were still in place. Watching their movements, the thieves could see where to find their targets. The police discovered the trick and removed the notices so that people would not unwittingly help the thieves rob them.
