At night a man switches off the last light still on in the building where he lives. The beam that regularly swept past his window disappears. In the morning he sees a wreck on the rocks below and realizes he endangered people at sea.

The answer
He lived in a lighthouse and had mistakenly switched off its navigational light. It was not an ordinary household lamp: its recurring beam shone over the sea. A ship had struck the rocks that night. The wreck made him recognize the consequence of switching off the wrong light.
