From prison a man writes to his wife that weapons are buried in their yard. The letter is checked and the police dig but find nothing. His wife writes back thanking him: she had asked for help with a different job, which is now nearly done.

The answer
His wife wanted to plant a vegetable garden but could not break up the soil alone. Knowing his mail was read, he invented the weapons to trigger a search. The police loosened the soil for him; the false information was mainly aimed at the people checking the letter.
