A client refuses to pay for her portrait. The painter displays it publicly, adding a label. Two days later she offers to buy it provided it is removed immediately. The painting has not been altered.

The answer
He had titled it “The Miser”. The likeness made the client recognizable, and the label turned her refusal to pay into a public humiliation. She had not changed her opinion of the portrait; buying it would remove the accusation displayed beside her image.
