A dead rabbit

A man finds his dog holding his neighbour’s dead rabbit. Its fur is dirty with soil and there is a fresh hole in the garden. He asks forgiveness, but the neighbour says, “Your dog did not kill it.” He is not merely trying to reassure him.

The answer
The rabbit had died the previous day and been buried in the garden. The dog dug it up. The soil and hole explained how it obtained the rabbit: holding it in its mouth did not mean it had caused its death. The neighbour was not denying that the dog had disturbed the burial.
