A writer returns to a library a year after donating a book. She opens it and finds a banknote where she left it. Recovering the money does not make her happy: she starts crying.

The answer
She left it as a gift for whoever borrowed the book and turned its pages. Finding it untouched made her fear nobody had taken an interest in her work. She was not mourning lost money, but the audience she had hoped to reach.
