A man woke up, lit a match and saw something that frightened him to death.

The answer
This man was a prisoner. He wanted to escape and asked the mortician to do something for him. When somebody in prison would die, the prisoner would hide in the coffin and would be buried along with the corpse outside the territory of prison. And after some time he would be released by this mortician. But something went wrong. When the prisoner opened his eyes after the burial and lit a match, he saw the face of the mortician. He understood that he is doomed and died of fright.
