The answer
The man was walking on a bridge trestle with steep drop-offs on both sides and was only a short distance from the end. He realized the train was quickly approaching, and he did not have time to turn around and go back. Therefore, he ran toward the train in order to reach the end of the trestle and the safety of solid ground to avoid being hit by the train.
